Due to doping, Russian hurdler Natalya Antyukh lost her 2012 gold medal from the 400-meter event at the 2012 Olympic Games. As a result, Lashinda Demus of the US will become the gold medalist more than a decade after the race.
Track and field’s drug watchdog, the Athletics Integrity Unit, revealed two months ago that Antyukh had not challenged a punishment that included erasing her results from July 2012 through June 2013. As a result, the AIU confirmed that the IOC could update its database and begin reallocating medals.
The medals for silver and bronze will go to the Czech Republic’s Zuzana Hejnová and Jamaica’s Kaliese Spencer, respectively.
Russian Hurdler Stripped of Olympic Gold
Antyukh was already banned for four years, but according to AIU, he had his 2012 results nullified as a consequence of evidence found in a database maintained by the Moscow anti-doping laboratory.
While the AIU did not provide any specifics, evidence from their lab was used to back up conclusions in several instances stemming from Russia’s state-sponsored doping scandal.
Antyukh ran a 52.70 in the London Olympics, which was.22 faster than her previous best and.07 faster than Demus’s time.
Bookie pay per head records show that in 2011, Demus won the global championships. However, at the end of 2016, she retired from competition.
Demus said she was not afraid to say that she deserved the Olympic gold medal, official title, and recognition when she won the race.
